The Original Air Root Pruning Containers®, RootMaker® and  RootBuilder®, and the next generation of nursery containers--white, water-conserving, soft-sided RootTrappers®, produce plants with fibrous root systems, equipped for transplant success.  These patented inventions are the result of research conducted by Carl Whitcomb, Ph.D.  He created Lacebark Inc., a horticultural research company located near Stillwater, OK, in 1986. His research also led to Micromax® micronutrient fertilizer and the patented new crapemyrtle: Dynamite®, Pink Velour®, Red Rocket®, Raspberry Sundae®, Tightwad Red®, Burgundy Cotton®, and Siren Red®, and the newly released Rhapsody in Pink®. Ask about the new 'Whit' crapemyrtle cultivars poster or oversized postcard to display for your customers. He has a patented hardy hibiscus, Cranberry Punch®, river birch, City Slicker®,  Easy Street® lacebark elm.   Lacebark Inc. also publishes Dr. Whitcomb's books: Know It and Grow It, Plant Production in Containers II, Production of Landscape Plants II, and the new 2006 Edition of Establishment and Maintenance of Landscape Plants II.

Besides continuing to develop new cultivars of other trees and shrubs, research also addresses nursery production methods in containers, the field, and transplanting into the landscape regarding water chemistry, nutrition, improved root systems, weed control, intercrops, and water conservation. Dr. Whitcomb also does consulting and speaking on a variety of topics, as time allows.

Dr. Carl Whitcomb was given the 2006 Henry A. Wallace Award from the Iowa State University College of Agriculture as an alumnus "who has made an outstanding contribution to national or international agriculture in writing, teaching, research, or leadership".
